Abdominal Wall Defects

Any of your child's abdominal organs that protrude through an opening in the abdominal wall is known as an abdominal wall defect. The size of this opening varies. Prenatal ultrasound is commonly used to detect birth defects of the abdominal wall. Your baby's abdomen needs to grow a few days after birth before you can begin treatment for abdominal wall defects. Dr MJ Human will perform surgery on your child as a form of treatment. Defects in the abdominal wall can be divided into two categories:

• Omphalocele
  Omphalocele is an abdominal wall birth defect. Your baby's intestines, liver, or other internal organs protrude through the belly button. A thin, nearly transparent sac covers the organs, which are rarely opened or broken. A small omphalocele can be found. Only a portion of the intestine will be visible. It can also be significant, with most abdominal organs located externally. Also, your baby's abdomen may not have enough room for growth. • Gastroschisis
  An intestinal protrusion near the belly button protrudes from the abdominal wall in babies born with gastroschisis, a birth defect. If the hole is large, other organs like the stomach and liver may also be found outside the baby's body. It is most common for the opening to be on the right side of the baby's belly button. Small or large, it is typically between two and five centimetres in length. Dr MJ Human's treatment for your child may change based on their unique situation. However, surgery will be required as a part of the treatment.

Hernias

A hernia occurs when a weak point in your muscle or tissue allows an internal organ to push through. Dr MJ Human can treat your child's hernia if it is one of the following:

• Epigastric
  Epigastric hernias are congenital in children. Children are born with them because of a failure to properly close fibrous tissue in the abdomen during the womb's gestation period. A part of your intestine pushed through your abdominal muscles into your chest causes an epigastric hernia.
• Umbilical
  When an umbilical hernia occurs, the umbilicus bulges outward. Hernias are formed when part of the abdominal wall muscle, part of the abdomen's lining, or fluid from the abdomen leaks out. Premature and low-birth-weight infants are more likely to suffer from an umbilical hernia.
• Incisional
  Children who undergo abdominal surgery run the risk of developing incisional hernias. Tissue protrusion at the site of the healing surgical scar is called an incisional hernia. It can lead to incarceration and bowel strangulation, both of which can be life-threatening. • Inguinal
  Groin hernias in infants are called inguinal hernias. By definition, the term inguinal refers to the area around the pubic bone. The groyne is a term used to describe the area between the hips and thighs of a child. An inguinal hernia occurs when part of your child's intestines protrude through an opening in their abdominal wall, and it is a painful condition.
